Local Students Shine in Illinois State Poetry Contest
May 1—STERLING—Three talented students from Newman Central Catholic High School have achieved notable recognition in the annual Illinois State Poetry Contest, showcasing their artistic prowess and creativity.
Ryan Partington, a senior, secured first place in the "Poems That Sing" category with his evocative piece titled "Repeated Words and Unchanging Radios." This category celebrates poems that resonate like song lyrics, highlighting Partington’s lyrical talent.
Sophomore Brooklyn Smith earned third place in the prestigious President’s Challenge Award with her introspective poem, "Dream," which explores the theme of aspirations and hopes. Classmate Matthew Murray, also a sophomore, received an Honorable Mention in the same category with his poignant piece, "Fleeting Memories of Him," reflecting on the transient nature of memories.
This year marks the third consecutive occasion that students from Newman have excelled in the Illinois State Poetry Contest, demonstrating the school’s dedication to fostering literary talent. The competition welcomes all students from grades 6-12 across public, private, and homeschool settings, encouraging a diverse range of voices.
Participants in the high school divisions competed across seven categories, each defined by thematic focus, line length, and rhyme schemes. Winners are awarded monetary prizes and the chance for their work to be published in the annual Fresh Ink anthology. Additionally, winning entries qualify for advancement to the prestigious National Manningham Trust Student Poetry Contest, further highlighting the significance of this achievement.
With younger poets like Partington, Smith, and Murray representing Newman Central Catholic, the future of local literature looks bright. The school community celebrates their accomplishments and looks forward to continued success in the arts.
