Nevada Attorney General Leads Coalition in Lawsuit Against Department of Education
Carson City, NV – Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced on April 25 that he has joined a coalition of 19 attorneys general in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). This legal action challenges the DOE’s recent threat to withhold federal funding from educational agencies that maintain diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
On April 3, the DOE mandated that education agencies adhere to the Trump administration’s interpretation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, or risk losing federal financial support. Refusing to comply with these new requirements, Nevada deemed the DOE’s interpretation unlawful.
Nevada receives nearly $1 billion annually from the DOE to support low-income families, special education, teacher training, and programs for English language learners and children in foster care. The coalition aims to prevent the DOE from implementing its funding sanctions, asserting that states should not have to choose between their existing compliance with civil rights laws and federal financial support.
