Press Release: New Burn Permit Requirements in Northern California
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit has announced that, effective May 1, 2025, all hazard reduction burning in Nevada, Yuba, Placer, and Sierra Counties will require a permit. Residents can obtain these permits online at https://burnpermit.fire.ca.gov/, which involves watching a brief educational video before submitting an application. This initiative aims to enhance safety and reduce the risk of fire escapes.
Permits will be valid annually from May 1 and must be kept in either digital or printed form. It is the responsibility of property owners to ensure that the burning is conducted on permissive burn days, which can be verified through local air quality management districts.
In addition to securing a permit, residents must adhere to strict fire safety guidelines, including maintaining a 10-foot clearance around burn piles and ensuring proper equipment is on hand during burning. Non-compliance may result in citations. For comprehensive fire safety tips, residents are encouraged to visit their local CAL FIRE station or access resources at www.readyforwildfire.org.
