Washington State Patrol Trials Innovative Technology in North Bend Area

Press Release: Enhancing Roadway Safety in North Bend with Innovative Technology

North Bend, WA — In a significant stride toward improving roadway safety, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is partnering with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) to pilot the breakthrough Safety Cloud technology developed by HAAS Alert. This initiative aims to provide real-time digital alerts to drivers when emergency vehicles are approaching or operating at the scene.

The Safety Cloud system delivers essential notifications that have been shown to reduce the risk of collisions by up to 90%. While Washington’s Move Over laws mandate that motorists slow down and change lanes for stationary emergency vehicles, traditional warning methods like flashing lights and sirens may not always be sufficient, particularly at high speeds or in poor visibility conditions.

This innovative solution sends alerts through various platforms, including popular navigation apps such as Waze and Apple Maps, and integrates into vehicle dashboards for models from 2018 and newer for certain brands, enhancing driver awareness.

“This technology bridges the gap between legal requirements and real-world practices,” stated Haley Shipman, Project Manager for the initiative. “Safety Cloud provides drivers with the critical extra time needed to react appropriately when they see our emergency lights, protecting both our personnel and the public.”

The system is designed for seamless integration, requiring no additional action from drivers who use standard navigation apps. WSP joins over 4,000 agencies across the nation already benefitting from this protection system, with plans for expanded vehicle compatibility.

“Roadside fatalities in the line of duty are preventable,” Shipman emphasized. “By combining technology with public awareness, we are committed to creating safer roads for everyone.”
