Nevada Enforces New Heat Safety Regulations for Workers
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — New regulations to protect Nevada workers from extreme heat took effect Tuesday, aimed at ensuring safer working conditions as summer temperatures rise. The rules, applicable to businesses with 10 or more employees, mandate the development of heat mitigation plans for those at risk of heat-related illnesses.
"Every worker in Nevada has the right to work in a workplace that is free of hazards," stated Victoria Carreon, Administrator of Nevada’s Division of Industrial Relations. Inspections will be focused on high-risk industries, such as construction and the casino sector, with both programmed and unprogrammed inspections conducted by Nevada OSHA in cases of reported hazards.
Employers must analyze whether a majority of workers face heat illness risks—defined as exposure exceeding 30 minutes per hour—and implement written safety plans if needed. Meanwhile, workers in climate-controlled environments are exempt but must still address recognized hazards.
The initiative follows record-breaking heat waves in Las Vegas last summer, which contributed to over 500 related fatalities. With forecasts predicting hotter-than-average temperatures this summer, the new regulations are expected to play a vital role in safeguarding employee health.
