Press Release
Statewide Adoption Event to Celebrate No-Kill Awareness Day
In a significant step toward animal welfare, Best Friends Animal Society is hosting a celebratory event on National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day, April 30, 2025, recognized as “No-Kill Awareness Day” across Georgia. This initiative is supported by recent resolutions passed in both the Georgia House and Senate, highlighting the state’s commitment to saving the lives of shelter pets.
To honor this occasion, participating shelters throughout Georgia will offer waived or reduced adoption fees for cats and dogs on Wednesday. “Last year, over 20,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in Georgia. Currently, 67 out of 162 shelters in the state have achieved no-kill status, aligning with the national trend where two-thirds of shelters are no-kill,” stated Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society. "We applaud Georgia’s commitment to becoming a no-kill state and encourage residents to adopt rather than buy pets."
The event aims to raise awareness about the urgent need to support shelter animals, with numerous shelters participating, including:
- Bill Atkinson Animal Welfare Center, Lawrenceville
- Bryan County Animal Services, Richmond Hill
- Camden County Animal Control, Woodbine
- Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, Gainesville
Adoption hours and fees vary by location, so pet seekers are encouraged to reach out directly to participating shelters for details.
Best Friends Animal Society continues to lead efforts in making the United States a no-kill nation, reinforcing the importance of adopting pets from shelters. Join us in this vital movement to protect and enhance the lives of homeless dogs and cats throughout Georgia.
