Gabby Kano Shines as Wolf Pack Athlete of the Month
SACRAMENTO, CA — Two weeks before the U.S. Women’s Open qualifier, Nevada Wolf Pack junior Gabby Kano found herself as an unexpected participant. Originally an alternate, she was suddenly placed in the 84-player field, marking the start of a remarkable journey. With her teammate’s father serving as her caddy, Kano drove to Del Paso Country Club, entering the competition without any high expectations.
In a stunning performance, the 20-year-old tied for co-medalist honors, finishing with a remarkable 7-under par over 36 holes. This accomplishment secured her a spot for next month’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin. In recognition of her achievement, Kano has been named Nevada Sports Net’s Wolf Pack Athlete of the Month for April.
In a recent interview, Kano expressed both excitement and disbelief about qualifying for the prestigious event. “It probably won’t fully set in until I actually get there,” she remarked. During her qualifier, Kano shot impressive rounds of 65 and 70, producing her best-ever 18-hole score of 65.
Kano attributed her success to maintaining a calm mindset and relying on her caddy’s insights. Her performance included 11 birdies, showcasing her exceptional skills and focus. As she prepares for the U.S. Open, she looks forward to learning from the pros, particularly how they manage routines and strategies on the course.
With a solid junior season behind her and a scoring average close to 72, Kano is poised for further success. Reflecting on her journey from picking up plastic clubs at age five to competing against the best, Kano emphasizes the importance of a consistent routine in golf.
As she gears up for the U.S. Open, her excitement is palpable. “I’m just excited to play a yardage that the pros play at,” Kano declared.
