From Alternate to Competitor: Nevada’s Gabby Kano Chases Her Dream at the U.S. Open

Nevada’s Gabby Kano Shines as She Qualifies for U.S. Women’s Open

SACRAMENTO—In a stunning twist of fate, Gabby Kano, a junior from the Nevada Wolf Pack, earned co-medalist honors at the U.S. Women’s Open qualifier held at Del Paso Country Club, securing her spot in the prestigious tournament next month at Erin Hills Golf Course in Wisconsin.

Just two weeks prior, Kano wasn’t even in the field, having been elevated from an alternate position. Accompanied by her teammate’s father as caddy, the 20-year-old delivered an outstanding performance, shooting a combined 7 under par over 36 holes. Kano tied for the top spot with former teammate Leah John, solidifying her place among the elite.

Reflecting on her achievement, Kano noted the support she received from family and friends, which included a surprise welcome sign upon returning home. "It probably won’t fully set in until I actually get there," she said.

During the qualifier, Kano shot a personal best 65 in the first round, demonstrating strong resilience and consistency. She attributed her success to maintaining her routine and trusting her caddy’s advice on reading the greens.

With aspirations now focused on the U.S. Open, Kano expressed eagerness to learn from the best, citing her excitement to observe the pros’ playing strategies and routines. "I’m really excited to play at a yardage that the GOATs play at," she shared.

Kano’s inspiring journey has earned her the title of Nevada Sports Net’s Wolf Pack Athlete of the Month for April. As she prepares for this monumental opportunity, her story serves as a testament to hard work and unwavering determination in the face of challenges.
