Elderly Woman Pleads Guilty in Major Prize Scam Targeting Seniors
Barbara Trickle, an 80-year-old resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, has pleaded guilty to her significant involvement in a widespread prize notice scam that duped thousands of elderly Americans and netted over $15 million. The operation, which spanned from 2012 to February 2018, preyed on seniors with deceptive mailings promising lavish cash prizes for a small fee.
In court, Trickle admitted she collaborated with others to inundate victims with fraudulent letters that falsely claimed they had won substantial rewards. Victims were instructed to pay fees ranging from $20 to $50 to claim their non-existent prizes. Instead of cash, most received low-value trinkets or basic promotional materials about real sweepstakes.
Trickle, who owned a printing and mailing company, orchestrated the entire scheme by designing, printing, and distributing these misleading communications. The operation was meticulously executed; once victims responded, their names would be added to a list, leading to a barrage of further solicitations for more money. Most victims were older adults, a demographic often targeted due to their trusting nature and limited awareness of fraud tactics.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) intervened in February 2018, executing search warrants that ultimately dismantled the scam. Following Trickle’s guilty plea, officials highlighted ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable seniors from such scams. Yaakov Roth from the Justice Department emphasized their commitment to safeguarding elderly consumers, while USPIS Inspector Eric Shen condemned the exploitation of vulnerable community members.
