Revolutionary School Bus Technology to Deter Misbehavior and Enhance Driver Focus

Jerome School District Enhances Student Safety with Cutting-Edge Bus Technology

Jerome, ID – In a move to improve student safety and support school bus drivers, the Jerome School District is set to implement advanced technology for its transportation system in the upcoming school year. Recognizing that bus environments can mirror chaotic classrooms, the district is introducing tools aimed at reducing misbehavior while the driver focuses on the road.

Each bus will be equipped with multiple cameras that allow real-time streaming and recording, providing visibility into student behavior both inside and outside the vehicle. Transportation staff will have the capability to intervene directly through the bus’s audio system when necessary. Additionally, an electronic pass system will enable students to scan in and out, enhancing tracking accuracy and helping parents to know their child’s whereabouts.

Tim Hicks, the district’s transportation director, emphasized the dual benefit of increased safety and support for bus drivers. “The technology will allow them to focus on their most important task—driving,” he said, adding that retaining drivers is crucial as low pay and atypical hours pose challenges.

In conjunction with new technology, the district is transitioning from contracted bus services to running its transportation department independently. This change not only promises cost savings but also greater control over staff and training. To facilitate this transition, Jerome will purchase a fleet of 32 new buses.

Cost considerations include a one-time start-up investment of approximately $4,500 per bus, with monthly fees of about $800 for ongoing support. Fortunately, state reimbursements will alleviate the burden on local finances.

Hicks believes these developments will streamline communication, reduce unnecessary inquiries from parents about bus locations, and enhance overall student wellbeing. As monitoring technology becomes standard across Idaho, Jerome School District aims to set a benchmark in student safety and operational efficiency through innovation.
