(CBC) projected the outcome as a “razor-thin minority government,” leading opposition leader Pierre Poilievre of the Conservatives to concede defeat and acknowledge the party’s failure to fully capitalize on public discontent with rising inflation and immigration.
Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau following his resignation in January, called a snap election to strengthen his mandate. With a background as a former central banker at the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Carney positioned himself to tackle economic challenges exacerbated by Trump’s policies, which had included imposing tariffs on Canadian goods and suggesting Canada become the 51st U.S. state.
The election highlighted growing Canadian frustration over U.S.-Canada relations, particularly as Trump’s comments intensified scrutiny of Poilievre’s alignment with him. Former President Joe Biden congratulated Carney, expressing confidence in his leadership aligning with shared North American values, while Canadian voters underscored their commitment to sovereign decision-making.
