Lombardo Unveils Education Accountability Act

Nevada Legislature Unveils Education Reform Bill to Boost Student Achievement

Henderson, NV – In a significant move to enhance educational outcomes in Nevada, Governor Joe Lombardo introduced the Nevada Accountability in Education Act during a visit to Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon, a K-12 charter school. The bill aims to improve student proficiency rates, create funding parity across schools, and ensure accountability among school boards and educators.

Lombardo emphasized that the act holds educational leaders responsible for performance and allocates financial incentives from the Education Stabilization Account. It introduces expanded school choice, including transportation support for families transferring from underperforming schools to charter or private institutions.

Interim State Superintendent Steve Canavero highlighted systemic issues affecting student performance, noting that schools identified as low-performing would enter a probation period with state oversight and a two-year timeline for improvement. The act aims to empower educators through a dedicated fund for high-performing teachers, rewarding them based on performance ratings.

With ongoing challenges in literacy and math – only 23.7% of eighth graders met math standards in 2023 – Lombardo stressed the necessity for urgent reform. He asserted, “We owe it to our communities to match our investments with real results and accountability” as Nevada strives for educational excellence.
