Global Coverage Planned for Pope Francis’ Funeral
Vatican City, April 26, 2023 — Vatican Radio – Vatican News is set to offer live coverage of the Solemn Requiem Mass for Pope Francis, starting at 10:00 AM Rome time today in St. Peter’s Square. This historic funeral, reminiscent of Pope John Paul II’s services two decades ago, will involve the first-ever live global broadcast of a Pope’s transfer of remains for burial.
The service, along with the procession to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major where the Pope wished to be laid to rest, will be streamed in 15 languages, including English, Italian, Spanish, and French, along with four sign languages: American Sign Language, Italian, Spanish, and French.
Vatican Television Center – Vatican Media will provide comprehensive visual coverage, featuring aerial and ground footage of both St. Peter’s Square and the route to the Basilica. Additionally, multimedia commentary will be available in 56 languages across various platforms, including radio, print, and social media.

Italian-language broadcast efforts will feature commentary from three positions, starting at 8:10 AM, transitioning to the Requiem Mass by 9:30 AM. Frequencies for Italian broadcasts include FM channels in Rome, DAB+ digital radio, and Eutelsat satellite coverage.
