El Mundo bids farewell to print but eyes a digital future
Las Vegas, NV—After nearly 50 years of serving the Latino community in Las Vegas, Edmundo Escobedo Jr. has announced the closure of El Mundo, a weekly Spanish-language newspaper co-founded by his father, Edmundo Escobedo Sr. The last print edition was distributed in March 2025, marking an end to an era defined by community engagement covering weddings, quinceañeras, and local sports.
El Mundo’s demise mirrors a national trend affecting print newspapers. As digital media continues to dominate, advertising revenues have plummeted, forcing many publications to downsize or close. Notably, the Las Vegas Review-Journal recently ceased its Spanish-language coverage, further highlighting the void left in local Hispanic news.
Community members lament the loss, emphasizing the importance of accessible information for the 20% of Nevada residents who speak Spanish at home. Nevertheless, Escobedo is optimistic about the paper’s future. By transitioning to a digital platform, he aims to engage a younger audience while preserving the newspaper’s community roots.
Plans for El Mundo Digital are underway, with hopes to attract both seasoned journalists and younger staff. Escobedo envisions special print editions to maintain ties with tradition, stating, “Technology changes. Everything changes.”
