The deadline for U.S. travelers to obtain a Real ID is quickly approaching, with May 7 as the cutoff date. Without a Real ID, travelers may not be able to board domestic flights. A Real ID is an upgraded driver’s license or state ID marked with a star, but there are alternative forms of identification accepted, including a valid U.S. passport, passport card, permanent resident card, and certain Department of Homeland Security trusted traveler cards.
Currently, about 19% of travelers lack a Real ID-compliant identification. Those arriving at the airport without acceptable ID could face delays, additional screenings, or potentially be denied entry to security checkpoints. Even with a Real ID or other acceptable ID, travelers should arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before their flight due to expected security delays.
The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, sets minimum security standards for state-issued IDs. Starting on May 7, it will be mandatory for access to federal facilities, which includes TSA security checkpoints and boarding commercial flights for all passengers 18 years and older.
Travelers can bypass the Real ID requirement by presenting approved identification such as a U.S. passport, Global Entry card, or enhanced driver’s licenses from specific states. The TSA has a comprehensive list of acceptable alternatives, including several forms of federal ID and certain tribal IDs.
While alternatives like passports are valid, they can be more complex and costly to replace if lost. Experts advise obtaining a Real ID as it is generally cheaper and easier to manage than a passport. Those who choose to travel without a Real ID after the deadline should be prepared for a potentially challenging screening process.
