Press Release: Historic Journey of Schuyler Colfax and Pioneers Through the West
On April 14, 1865, just hours before President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax met with Lincoln to discuss a crucial expedition to the Pacific Coast. Colfax was tasked with ensuring the progress of the transcontinental railroad and boosting morale among miners, pivotal to the nation’s economy.
Joining Colfax were prominent journalists: William Bross, Samuel Bowles, and Albert Richardson. Their journey covered nearly 1,500 miles by railroad, 2,000 miles by stagecoach, and additional steamship travel. The group celebrated their arrival in San Francisco on July 1, after stops including Sacramento.
In Grass Valley, Colfax delivered a heartfelt message from Lincoln, emphasizing the importance of miners to national prosperity. The reports described a warm reception, with Colfax’s speech resonating deeply with a crowd of over a thousand. He echoed Lincoln’s commitment to supporting mining interests, promising to advocate for them in Congress.
Their visit continued to Nevada City, where Colfax spoke highly of the Pacific Railroad Act, authored by local congressman Aaron Sargent. Three years later, Colfax became Vice President under Ulysses S. Grant, solidifying his legacy in American history.
