Penn State Students Showcase "A Freaking Bad Musical" Inspired by "Breaking Bad"
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – In a creative twist on chemistry, Penn State students unveiled “A Freaking Bad Musical,” a lively adaptation of the hit television series “Breaking Bad,” on Thursday. Led by writer Evan Stocker, the performance captivated audiences at Thomas 100, with showings running until Saturday evening.
The musical follows Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher recently diagnosed with stage three lung cancer. Faced with mounting medical bills, White turns to an unconventional solution: manufacturing methamphetamine with his former student, Jesse Pinkman. Their journey into the criminal underworld moves quickly, setting up a mobile lab deep in the New Mexico desert while personal relationships strain at home.
Audience members were treated to a comedic and absurd exploration of White’s double life. Attendee Becca Williams, a first-year English major, expressed her enjoyment despite not being familiar with the original show. “I was really confused, but it was great,” she said. “I liked the relationship between Mr. White and Jesse; it was beautiful.”
Ella Enck, another viewer, claimed the musical surpassed its source material, stating, “10 out of 10, better than the show.” Her enthusiasm echoed a common sentiment among viewers who found the production fresh and original. Audience favorite Lila Dibble particularly enjoyed the humor, especially during a scene where Jesse hilariously drank the chemicals.
The cast delighted the audience with their energetic performances, closing the second act with a lively rendition of “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees. As the final bows were taken, attendees were left buzzing with laughter, solidifying the musical’s success within the Penn State community.
