Immigration Resource Fair Addresses Rising Anxiety and Scams in Southern Nevada
LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Increased sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents across southern Nevada have heightened fears among vulnerable immigrant communities, leading to a rise in scams targeting these groups. In response, over 50 "Know Your Rights" sessions have been held statewide, along with a recent resource fair titled "Unidos con la Comunidad," organized by the Nevada Immigrant Coalition at United Nissan.
Families are on high alert; a local sixth grader, speaking anonymously, described his parents’ anxiety about their immigration status, emphasizing the need for awareness of ICE operations. The fair brought together organizations like Make the Road Nevada, ACLU, and the UNLV Immigration Clinic to educate attendees about available resources and legal rights.
ACLU Executive Director Athar Haseebullah noted a concerning trend of false reports alleging ICE presence at events, designed to intimidate attendees. He urged the community to verify information and consult trusted organizations before acting on dubious requests.
While the recent ICE activities have not involved large raids, they have been targeted, primarily affecting individuals with prior removal orders. Organizers emphasize the importance of knowing constitutional rights regardless of immigration status, reassuring the community of efforts to safeguard their well-being.
