Bear River and Nevada Union High Schools Launch Dual Enrollment Program Funded by $1 Million Grant
For the first time, all freshmen at Bear River and Nevada Union High School will have the opportunity to enroll in Sierra College courses, thanks to a nearly $1 million grant from the California K12 Strong Workforce program. This $940,919 funding is set to enhance career technical education (CTE) programs by connecting local high school students with community colleges and industry pathways.
Starting next year, ninth graders are required to participate in a semester-long "Career Choices" course, which encourages long-term goal setting. Students will explore their desired futures, including career options and financial planning, learning to budget for essential costs like insurance and taxes.
The grant allows Sierra College instructors to teach at the high schools, facilitating a dual enrollment model that helps students earn college credits while still in high school. This initiative aims to ease the transition to college, particularly for first-generation students navigating the application process.
Principal Kelly Rhoden emphasized that the program helps students create a ten-year plan for their future, intertwining academic learning with career exploration, internships, and practical experiences, paving the way for informed choices upon graduation.
