Klitschko’s remarks represent a shift in the Ukrainian government’s position and have been deemed “counterproductive” by some advisers in Zelenskyy’s office. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated in 2022 when Putin launched a full-scale invasion, resulting in Russia controlling a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea. Zelenskyy has remained steadfast in his refusal to permanently cede any land, stating that it belongs to the Ukrainian people.
