The Nevada Immigrant Coalition held a community meeting in response to recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Las Vegas and Reno. Reports of ICE activity in various neighborhoods, businesses, and even near schools have raised concerns among immigrants and advocates. Speakers at the meeting highlighted the importance of knowing and asserting constitutional rights, regardless of immigration status. Executive Director of the ACLU of Nevada emphasized that constitutional rights apply to everyone, not just U.S. citizens. The NIC urged people to know their rights, including the right to refuse entry to ICE agents without a warrant and the right to remain silent during questioning. The organization provided resources for immigrants to understand and protect their rights. The meeting aimed to inform and empower the immigrant community amid increasing ICE activity, including potential sightings at the Tesla Gigafactory in Reno. Immigrants and allies are encouraged to stay informed and seek assistance from organizations like the NIC. Press release available for more information.
