Recent reports have highlighted instances of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) mistakenly arresting U.S. citizens or individuals with legal status whose visas were unexpectedly revoked. One example includes the wrongful arrest of U.S. citizen Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez by ICE in April. Despite ICE not publicly disclosing the legal status of those arrested, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that hundreds of students have had their visas revoked in recent weeks, leading to many detentions. ICE has the authority to arrest noncitizens with administrative warrants or without warrants if there is reason to believe they are in violation of the law and likely to escape. This information comes amidst discussions about ICE’s enforcement practices and the targeted arrests of individuals with legal status.
