Recent research has shown that individuals living with prediabetes can significantly lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by following a digital lifestyle programme. A study found that those with prediabetes who participated in an online behavioural intervention were 46% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes in the next 10 years compared to those not on a digital programme.
Type 2 diabetes is associated with various health conditions, making it crucial to prevent its onset. In the United States, more than a third of middle-aged and older adults have prediabetes. Despite the positive outcomes of traditional in-person lifestyle programmes, they are not widely adopted.
The study examined over 130,000 adults, with 36.2% having prediabetes and 7.5% having type 2 diabetes. Participants who followed a digital dietitian-guided lifestyle programme focused on dietary and behavioural changes were significantly less likely to develop type 2 diabetes over the next decade. Additionally, those with prediabetes in the intervention group saw improvements in their triglycerides and cholesterol levels.
The findings highlight the importance of early intervention and the potential benefits of digital lifestyle programmes in preventing type 2 diabetes. The researchers suggest that fully digital interventions may have less impact compared to blended or face-to-face approaches. The study was published in the journal Nutrients and provides valuable insights on managing prediabetes and preventing the progression to type 2 diabetes.
