The fate of a proposed bill in Nevada to increase the minimum liability insurance requirement for truck drivers will be decided by the crossover deadline on April 22. The bill would raise the minimum insurance from $750,000 to $1.5 million by 2030. Trucking groups, including the Nevada Trucking Association and the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, oppose the bill, arguing that it is arbitrary, burdensome, and unnecessary. The American Property Casualty Insurance Association also opposes it, saying it would make it difficult for truckers to get insurance. Some lawmakers, such as Sen. Ira Hansen, believe the current insurance requirements are sufficient and that the bill is attempting to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. The Senate must vote on the bill by Tuesday, or it will die. Critics argue that the legislation is a bad idea that could harm small businesses and the trucking industry.
