Nevada leaders are pushing for the federal government to release more land to address the state’s housing crisis, with concerns raised by conservation groups about water sustainability in the Las Vegas Valley. Assembly leaders passed AJR10, urging Congress to act on releasing land to the state. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto emphasized the need for responsible growth while protecting sensitive landscapes. The proposed “Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act” would release federal land for development while preserving millions of acres for conservation and recreation. Concerns have been raised about the potential land shortage by 2032 and the strain on water resources from increasing population and climate change. Suggestions include focusing on infill development within the Las Vegas Valley to maximize available land and reduce water usage. The Southern Nevada Water Authority is working on long-term planning to address potential water supply challenges. New development codes are in place to ensure efficiency in water use. The goal is to decrease overall water usage per person and mitigate environmental impacts of development.
