Developer Alex Meruelo held an exclusive event at Lawlor Events Center in Reno to present his $1 billion redevelopment plan for Grand Sierra Resort, focusing on building an arena that would benefit the region and the university. The project aims to transform the current GSR property into an arena for Nevada men’s basketball and a minor-league hockey team, a community ice rink, an eight-story garage, and a retail plaza. Despite drawing criticism for requesting tax-increment financing, Meruelo and project proponents argue that the arena would generate significant tax revenue for Reno while also providing economic benefits.
Speakers at the event emphasized how crucial the arena would be for the future of Wolf Pack athletics, highlighting the financial struggles faced by the university and its need for a modern facility to attract top recruits and generate additional revenue. The proposed arena project has faced opposition from competitors and concerns about economic displacement, with critics arguing that private developers should not seek public funding for profit-driven ventures.
A decision on the public-money request, which is crucial for the project to move forward, will be made by the Reno Redevelopment Agency Board on May 7. If approved, construction is expected to begin in June. Supporters of the project believe that the arena would bring new events and entertainment options to Reno, creating jobs and increasing tourism in the area. Ultimately, the success of Meruelo’s ambitious redevelopment plan will depend on the willingness of the city council to support the use of public funds for the project.
