Nevada Sports Net, in partnership with America First Credit Union, features a “High School Prep of the Week” honor, highlighting a local athlete. This week’s spotlight is on the 4th annual Unified Mayhem Basketball Tournament hosted by Special Olympics Nevada, presented by Dolan Toyota Auto Group. The tournament took place at the Swift Sportsdome, where ten high school teams competed for the championship trophy. Hug and Reed made it to the championship game, with the Hawks emerging victorious over the Raiders with a score of 8-2. The tournament provides an opportunity for athletes with and without mental disabilities to engage in competitive sports in a tournament-like setting.
According to Dominique Christion, the Director of School Initiatives for Special Olympics Nevada, the tournament is not only amazing for the community but also for the students involved. Schools participating in the Unified Champion Schools program have integrated unified sports into their curriculum, promoting inclusivity and fostering friendships among students. Teachers are thrilled to see their students showcasing their abilities and working together towards a common goal.
