The Nevada Justice Association (NJA), a powerful group representing trial lawyers, emerged as the top donor to state legislators during the 2024 election cycle, donating over $320,000 and 73 percent going to Democrats. This exceeded donations from major industries such as energy and finance. NJA, with over 800 members, has considerable influence in the legislature, advocating for consumer access to trials and influencing a wide range of bills.
One of their key priorities this session was resolving a dispute with Uber over capping attorney fees in civil settlements. This conflict led to a proposed ballot initiative, ultimately nullified by the Nevada Supreme Court. A deal was reached through legislation requiring ridesharing companies to provide a minimum insurance coverage of $1 million for drivers. The agreement was spearheaded by Governor Joe Lombardo.
NJA has also supported bills such as SB258, outlining payouts in workers’ compensation cases where a third party is responsible, and SB180, which establishes insurance requirements for trucks. Additionally, the group has donated substantially to PACs associated with influential lawmakers, such as Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager and Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui.
With significant contributions and political activity, NJA has solidified its position as a major player in Nevada’s political landscape. Their influence extends beyond direct donations, affecting legislation related to various areas including workers’ compensation and family law. As the legislative session progresses, NJA continues to advocate for their priorities and maintain a bipartisan approach to engaging with lawmakers.
