Nevada Sports Net is wrapping up 2024 by recognizing the top athletes of the year with a top-10 countdown, featuring today’s athlete, Ian Gilligan. The Galena High graduate and golfer made waves in 2024 by transferring from Long Beach State to the University of Florida, the defending national champion. Gilligan quickly established himself as one of the top college golfers in the nation, earning three SEC Golfer of the Week honors and clinching the GCAA/SWING U Golfer of the Month title in February after winning the Southern Highlands Collegiate tournament. His success earned him an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Shriners Open, where he made the cut and tied for 16th place. Gilligan’s performance also earned him an All-American honorable mention and a 36th national ranking, according to Clippd. He further showcased his skills by competing in the Arnold Palmer Cup in Ireland.
Looking ahead to 2025, Gilligan has returned to Florida for his senior season and has already achieved a 41st national ranking during the fall semester. He aims to lead Florida to a national championship this spring before transitioning into a professional golf career. Currently ranked eighth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, Gilligan is poised for continued success in the golfing world as he makes the leap to the next level.
