The Nevada Capital was filled with the sounds of Mariachi music and the smell of traditional Latino dishes as community members from across the state gathered for Latino Lobby Day. Organized by the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus in partnership with community groups, the event gave Latinos the opportunity to engage with state lawmakers and learn about the legislative process.
Maria Prentice, a Las Vegas resident and active member of Chispa Nevada, emphasized the importance of speaking to elected officials about bills affecting her community. She traveled six hours to Carson City to testify about issues that impact her and her community. Assemblymember Steve Yeager described his meeting with Prentice as “positive,” highlighting the impact of such direct interactions between constituents and lawmakers.
Assemblymember Cinthia Zermeño Moore expressed excitement about the significant turnout of Latinos at the event, encouraging continued participation in state government processes. The event coincided with Cesar Chavez Day, with the caucus focusing on bills such as Dolores Huerta Day to honor the labor rights activist and United Farm Workers co-founder.
