In 1972, Phyllis Bailer was found dead with a gunshot wound and sexually assaulted in Indiana. Her unharmed 3-year-old daughter was found with her. DNA evidence was finally tested years later, leading to a suspect being identified in 2025. Fred Allen Lienemann, a Michigan man with a criminal history, was linked to the DNA found on Bailer’s clothing. Lienemann had no known connection to Bailer but was killed in Detroit in 1985 after being beaten with a baseball bat during an argument about property. If alive, he would have been charged with Bailer’s murder. The case remains unsolved due to Lienemann’s death, and his motive for the crime is still unknown. Indiana State Police worked with a forensic genealogy company to identify the suspect, highlighting the importance of advancements in DNA technology in solving cold cases.
