A Republican-led congressional committee has renewed its referral of former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for prosecution, accusing him of lying during testimony about his administration’s handling of the pandemic. The House Oversight Committee, under Rep. James Comer, previously referred Cuomo to the Department of Justice for his involvement in a report criticizing his administration, but the DOJ did not publicly respond. Cuomo is accused of reviewing, editing, and drafting portions of the report that was supposed to be an independent analysis. Comer stated that lying to Congress is a federal crime and Cuomo must be prosecuted. Cuomo’s spokesman has not yet responded to the accusations.
Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amidst sexual misconduct allegations he denied, is now seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York. The incumbent, Eric Adams, elected as a Democrat, announced he was running for re-election as an independent after corruption charges against him were dismissed. Comer’s renewed request for prosecution of Cuomo comes as he attempts to restart his political career. Cuomo’s previous spokesman called the committee’s actions a “taxpayer-funded farce.” The House Oversight Committee is willing to cooperate with the Justice Department in investigating Cuomo’s actions and holding him accountable.
