The Quincy Better Business Bureau recently released a new study on identity theft, revealing an increase in reports over the past three years. With so much personal information being shared online, scammers are constantly seeking ways to steal data for financial gain. The study found that scammers are using new technology like AI to trick more people faster, and often sell stolen information on the dark web for future scams.
To protect yourself from identity theft, the BBB recommends being cautious of misspelled website URLs, suspicious links in emails, low-quality website designs, texts from unknown sources, and unexpected messages on social media. It is important to secure your personal information, monitor your accounts regularly, use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, and protect your financial identity by freezing your credit if necessary.
Don O’Brien, the regional director for the Quincy Better Business Bureau, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding personal information and being vigilant against potential scams. Contact him at dobrien@quincybbb.org or (217) 209-3972 for more information on protecting yourself from identity theft. With these precautions in place, individuals can reduce their risk of falling victim to scams and keep their personal information safe from prying eyes.
