Recovery effort in Myanmar hampered by aftershocks and resource shortage three weeks after earthquake

Three weeks after a massive earthquake hit Myanmar, basic services are still not restored to the worst-hit areas. A UN report states that central Myanmar continues to experience strong aftershocks almost daily, disrupting recovery efforts and exacerbating limited resources and services. The quake caused significant damage to six regions and states, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis due to the country’s civil war. The death toll has reached 3,726 with thousands injured and missing. The quake damaged tens of thousands of buildings including schools, hospitals, and temples. The rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing, with local and international rescue teams working together to clear debris, rescue survivors, and provide assistance. The UN estimates that around 2.5 million tons of debris need to be removed, highlighting the scale of the destruction. Government buildings in Naypyitaw remain unrepaired, and the military government is considering redesigning the urban layout of the city. The situation is challenging due to ongoing aftershocks and limited resources, but the efforts to provide relief and support to the affected communities are continuing.
