Prosecutors aim for a 7-year prison sentence for George Santos in fraud case

Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of more than seven years in prison for former U.S. Rep. George Santos, who pleaded guilty to federal fraud and identity theft charges. They argue that Santos’ crimes, including fabricating his background and stealing money from vulnerable donors, warrant a significant sentence. Santos’ lawyers have pushed back against this proposal, arguing for a two-year prison term instead.

Santos, a once-rising Republican who represented parts of Queens and Long Island, was ousted by his House colleagues in 2023 after it was revealed that he had fabricated much of his life story. He admitted to duping voters, deceiving donors, and stealing identities to make donations to his campaign.

As part of his plea deal, Santos agreed to pay restitution and forfeiture fees totaling over half a million dollars. However, a judge granted him a three-month reprieve to come up with the funds. Meanwhile, prosecutors allege that Santos has profited significantly from his infamy through appearances on Cameo and a documentary since his expulsion from Congress.

Two of Santos’ campaign staffers have also pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the campaign financing scheme. One has already been sentenced to federal prison, while the other is awaiting sentencing in May. Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on April 25, with his lawyers arguing for a lenient sentence taking into account his cooperation in a separate federal investigation.
