In a recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Anne Traum, Nevada will begin enforcing a law requiring parental notification for minors seeking abortions starting April 30. This decision comes after a federal judge lifted a decades-old injunction, allowing the state law to take effect. The law, which mandates that physicians notify a parent or obtain a judicial bypass before performing an abortion on a minor, had been on hold since 1985 due to a federal injunction. Judge Traum emphasized that the case was not about the merits of parental notification but whether the injunction remained legally valid.
The change in enforcement follows the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade. Nevada voters passed a ballot question in November 2024 to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution. If passed again in 2026, the constitutional amendment would add an extra layer of protection for abortion access in the state. The case may proceed to the Ninth Circuit Appellate Court in San Francisco if appealed. News 4-Fox 11 has reached out to Attorney General Aaron Ford’s office for comment on the recent ruling. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
