New Nevada Property Tax Bill Proposed to Fund 800 Metro Officers Through Property Taxes | Nevada News报道

State Senate Democratic leaders and Las Vegas-area officials are collaborating to extend a Clark County property tax levy for another 30 years in support of funding for over 800 officers in the Metropolitan Police Department. Sen. Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro introduced Senate Bill 451 to continue the 20 cents per $100 assessed value property tax levy, which currently generates around $158 million annually for the department.
Cannizzaro emphasized the importance of dedicated detective units to investigate complex crimes and expressed concern that without the funding, there could be a reduction in the department’s ability to address such cases. The bill does not propose a change in the tax rate and would expire in June 2057, ensuring stable funding for Metro.
The Metro property tax amounts to $310 of a $3,100 tax bill on a $500,000 house, and officials have emphasized the importance of passing the bill promptly as Metro is set to begin planning its next budget cycle. Failure to pass the bill could result in a significant loss of revenue for the department.
Multiple industry groups, including the Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Nevada Resort Association, have expressed their support for the bill. Clark County officials highlighted the bill’s importance in maintaining Metro’s funding levels and keeping up with the community’s growth.
The bill does not require a new public vote, only approval from the Legislature, Gov. Joe Lombardo, Clark County commissioners, and the city of Las Vegas. Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley also backed the bill, stating that it continues an important funding mechanism approved by voters in 1996. The bill is scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Revenue and Economic Development Committee on Thursday.
