Nevada to mandate parental notification for minors seeking abortion | Update on Nevada’s new requirement for minors seeking abortion | Nevada | Latest News

After 40 years of being unenforced, a Nevada law requiring parental notification for minors seeking an abortion will finally go into effect at the end of the month. U.S. District Court Judge Anne Traum lifted the injunction on the 1985 law, stating that with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, there is no legal basis for preventing its implementation. The law allows minors to notify their parents of their intent to have an abortion, with exceptions for situations where it may not be in the minor’s best interest.

Supporters of the law, such as Nevada Right to Life executive director Melissa Clement, believe it will provide much-needed support for minors facing unplanned pregnancies and protect them from sex traffickers and child abusers. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, on the other hand, views the law as an assault on individuals’ rights to control their bodies and believes that minors should be able to make informed decisions about their reproductive health without parental notification.

The Nevada attorney general’s office declined to comment on the ruling, citing pending litigation.
