Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford has joined a coalition of attorneys general from 23 states in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and its head Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for terminating nearly $12 billion in public health grants. Ford claims that the funding cut, which would impact public health services in Nevada, is illegal and displays a complete indifference to the lives of Nevadans. The lawsuit argues that the mass terminations violate federal law and seeks to invalidate them.
The termination of grants would cause local public health authorities and the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory to lose $35 million, impacting services such as the Renown Crisis Stabilization Center in Northern Nevada. Ford’s office also highlighted the negative impact on grant-funded positions that supported vital public health programs in the state.
This lawsuit is just one of many legal actions Ford has taken against the Trump administration, including litigation seeking to block the dismantling of the Department of Education. The administration has defended its actions as necessary to bring the federal budget into balance, as the federal deficit stands at around $1.15 trillion.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island, seeks to stop the unlawful and destructive decision to terminate the public health grants. The White House did not immediately comment on the lawsuit, but the coalition of attorneys general is confident that they will prevail in court to protect public health services for Nevadans.
