Attorney General Aaron Ford has recently filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for canceling $12 billion in grants, $35 million of which was intended for local health initiatives. Ford, along with 23 other Democratic attorneys general, criticized the abrupt terminations of the grants, which have caused chaos for state health agencies. The cuts have resulted in dozens of layoffs in Nevada, including 25 employees in the state health department and 20 from UNLV’s School of Public Health. The Health and Human Services spokesperson defended the decision, stating that the agency will no longer allocate funds for pandemic-related issues that they believe are no longer relevant. Ford argued that Kennedy does not have the authority to terminate grants created by Congress based on the claim that the health crisis is over. The group of attorneys general are seeking a temporary restraining order to prevent the cuts and protect public health in their states.
