Lithuania Recovers Vehicle Used by 4 Missing U.S. Soldiers

Lithuania’s Defense Ministry successfully pulled a U.S. military vehicle out of a bog, nearly a week after four American soldiers went missing. The soldiers were reported missing during a training mission near the border with Belarus. The vehicle, an M88 Hercules, was discovered submerged in a muddy bog, trapping the soldiers inside.

U.S. Navy divers were able to attach cables to the sunken vehicle to lift it out, despite challenges posed by the dense mud. Rescue efforts were also hindered by a landslide, making the operation an “exhausting fight with the power of the deep swamp”.

The search involved Lithuanian military helicopters, dive teams, and hundreds of American and Lithuanian soldiers and law enforcement officers. Lithuania and other former Soviet states in Eastern Europe are concerned about NATO’s strength under President Trump. However, the joint recovery efforts demonstrated the importance of allies working together.

Poland, Lithuania’s neighbor and another NATO member, sent military engineers to assist in the rescue mission. Belarus and Russia, close allies, have criticized Lithuania for hosting American and allied troops. The successful retrieval of the U.S. military vehicle highlights the importance of multinational cooperation in times of crisis.
