USDA cuts impact Nevada food bank and local farming support programs | Nevada | News

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the termination of funding for two programs in Nevada that supported locally sourced food options for schools and food banks, as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to reduce federal spending. The programs, known as Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program (LFS) and 2025 Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA), were set to receive millions in funding in the 2025 fiscal year. The termination of these programs will have a significant impact on food banks, such as Three Square Food Bank, which could see a reduction in food supply by the summertime.

With food insecurity still a concern in Nevada, the cuts come as a blow to communities relying on food assistance. Approximately one in seven people in Southern Nevada are food insecure, with recent increases in demand for food assistance during the pandemic. The termination of the funding grants will also impact local producers and processors who were supplying food to the state’s food banks through these programs.

In response to the funding cuts, a bill introduced in the Nevada Legislature seeks to provide $800,000 from the general fund to support the Home Feeds Nevada program. The bill also aims to find sustainable funding sources for food purchase programs in the state. The termination of these programs will not only affect food banks and individuals experiencing hunger but also have a negative impact on the agricultural community in Nevada.
