German native Lilly Urban thought her dream of becoming a college athlete in the U.S. was dashed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she reconnected with Nevada and set a school record in javelin with a throw of 52.56 meters. Urban, only a sophomore, won bronze at the Mountain West Championships and reached the NCAA West Preliminary. Her success this season earned her the title of Wolf Pack Athlete of the Month for March.
In a recent Q&A, Urban discussed her record-breaking throw, her focus on strength and speed training in the offseason, and her transition to the multis group in practice. Originally from a small town in Germany, Urban got into javelin at a young age and was recruited by Coach Scott Williamson to compete for Nevada. Despite almost missing out on her opportunity due to COVID, Urban is now living her dream in Reno.
Reflecting on her life in Germany, Urban shared memories of her small town upbringing and love for track and field. While adapting to life in Reno has been different, Urban is embracing the change and enjoying her time in the U.S. Even though biking around Reno is not an option, Urban navigates the city with Uber rides.
