Death toll from Myanmar earthquake spikes to over 1000, with more than 2000 injured

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has resulted in a death toll of 1,002, with 2,376 people injured and 30 missing. The disaster also caused significant damage to infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings. International aid has begun to arrive in Myanmar, with China, Russia, and the U.S. offering assistance. The United States Geological Survey predicted that the death toll could exceed 10,000, with losses potentially greater than the country’s GDP.

Rescue operations are underway in affected areas, with a Chinese rescue team arriving in Myanmar and a Russian team set to follow. In neighboring Thailand, a 33-story tower collapsed in Bangkok, leading to nine deaths and 101 people missing. Rescue efforts in Thailand have been intensified to search for survivors trapped under the rubble.

The earthquake struck during the daytime, providing people with a better chance to respond to the disaster. The mix of traditional and modern buildings in Myanmar also plays a role in the impact of the earthquake, with traditional structures being less potentially deadly than concrete buildings. The situation in Myanmar and Thailand remains concerning, but efforts are ongoing to rescue survivors and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake.
