Nevada County Remembers Chuck Jaffee: A Life of Stories and Service
Nevada County recently bid farewell to a beloved figure, Charles Nelson “Chuck” Jaffee, who passed away on Halloween. Known for his vibrant personality and quirky sense of humor, Chuck often donned shorts and sandals, making his rare coat and tie costume a memorable sight. In his final moments, he softly uttered, “No more stories,” yet his life was rich with narratives worth telling.
Born on January 24, 1950, in Oradell, New Jersey, Chuck was a graduate of the Wharton School of Business and later pursued a graduate degree in Education from Penn. His storytelling talent and passion for engaging others blossomed during his teaching career in Philadelphia, where he created interactive games to captivate high school students. Choosing an unconventional path, Chuck moved to California in the 1970s instead of joining the family business. His adventurous spirit saw him biking across the U.S. and Northern Spain, as well as enjoying activities like tennis and hiking.
After retiring, Chuck and his life partner, Marvina, settled in Nevada County, where he became an integral part of the community. As a member of Sierra Writers, he mentored young writers and published two books of Haikus. His movie reviews for the Union Newspaper’s Prospector magazine made him a familiar voice in local cinema appreciation, while his participation in the annual Wild and Scenic Film Festival further showcased his passion for film and environmental issues.
Chuck’s long-running newsletter, THE CampChuck REVIEWER, shared his Academy Award picks and encouraged charitable contributions to organizations like the Food Bank of Nevada County. His legacy of humor, intellectual discourse, and love for the outdoors will endure in the hearts and memories of those he touched. Chuck Jaffee will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his significant contributions to both his community and the art of storytelling.
