Riley Gillis Makes Their MARC

Riley Gillis, a third-year student at the University of Nevada, Reno, is making waves in the biomedical sciences through his involvement in the MARC Nevada Program. The program aims to increase diversity in the field by supporting students pursuing Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. degrees.
Gillis, a double major in public health and microbiology and immunology, has a passion for research that benefits underserved communities. His work in a research lab focuses on developing diagnostic tests for tropical pathogens, with a goal of helping resource-limited countries.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Gillis is involved in musical activities and public service, meeting with White House officials during their visits to Nevada. He also leads a team of researchers focused on discovering treatments for emerging fungal pathogens, such as Candida auris.
With funding support from the MARC Nevada program, Gillis is expanding his skills by participating in biosafety training. He credits the program with allowing him to prioritize his academics and focus on his research without worrying about financial constraints.
Gillis’s dedication to his research, musical talents, and commitment to community service exemplify The Wolf Pack Way at the University of Nevada, Reno. His drive to make a difference in the world through his work in the lab and beyond is an inspiration to his peers and mentors alike.
