Nevada voters may have the opportunity to make changes to the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) through question one on this year’s ballot. This measure would give the state legislature more authority over budgeting within NSHE by removing the Board of Regents from the Nevada Constitution and placing them in the Nevada Revised Statutes.
The Board of Regents, much like a corporate board of directors, governs the NSHE and is responsible for setting policies and approving budgets for Nevada’s public system of higher education. Supporters of question one argue that it would increase oversight and accountability, addressing concerns that state legislators have received complaints about the practices and policies of the Board of Regents.
However, opponents of the measure believe it is a power grab by the state and could lead to increased political interference in curriculum and academic standards. Question one was previously on the 2020 ballot but was narrowly voted down by voters.
