Optimizing Phage Technology with AI Tools to Address AMR


Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in agriculture is becoming a major global health threat, with antibiotic-resistant bacteria projected to cause more deaths than cancer by 2050. The economic impact of this crisis is estimated to be around $1.5 trillion. However, emerging technology utilizing bacteriophages is showing promise in addressing this issue. Proteon Pharmaceuticals has been at the forefront of research in bacteriophage applications for over 15 years.

Justyna Andrysiak, the chief product and technology officer at Proteon Pharmaceuticals, highlighted the innovative approach of the company in characterizing and producing bacteriophages in a scalable and repeatable manner. The use of molecular biology and AI-driven genomic analysis has enabled Proteon to develop specific phage cocktails that enhance product stability, specificity, and resistance resilience. The company has received approval for its products in various countries, including the US, India, South Africa, and Brazil.

Another company, Phagos, based in Paris, is leveraging machine learning and AI to streamline the process of identifying effective phage-bacteria combinations. This approach allows Phagos to develop solutions faster than competitors and adapt phage solutions dynamically to bacterial evolution, making them effective in combating antimicrobial resistance.

Regulatory advancements are seen as essential for the full realization of the potential of bacteriophages in animal and human health. Proteon is working with industry partners to develop market-ready products, but there are concerns about the lagging regulatory framework in the EU. PhageEU, an advocacy group, is urging the EU to recognize and support bacteriophages as effective alternatives to antibiotics. The recent release of guidelines by the European Medicines Agency on the quality, safety, and efficacy of veterinary medicinal products for phage therapy is a positive step towards supporting the development of phage technology in the EU. By aligning regulatory and funding support, Europe could lead in phage innovation to promote sustainable agriculture and resilient food systems.
