Police are searching for a second suspect after a man pretending to be a utility worker was charged with murder in connection to a home invasion

Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, has been charged with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment in connection with a “gruesome” attack on a Michigan couple in their home. Hernandez posed as a utility worker to gain entrance to the house along with another unidentified man. They claimed to be from a local energy company and had fake ID badges and a phony work order. The attack resulted in the murder of Hussein Murray, 72, and his wife being tied up and robbed.

After the incident, Hernandez was arrested in Louisiana and is also wanted in Ohio for an alleged armed robbery. The second suspect seen in the doorbell camera footage is still at large. The couple was targeted because they owned a jewelry and pawn shop in Detroit, according to investigators.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office warned residents to beware of imposters posing as utility workers and advised checking for proper identification before allowing anyone into their homes. DTE Energy also released a statement urging people to ask for badge with photo ID if anyone claims to be from the company. The company provided a phone number for residents to verify the credentials of any workers.

The prosecutor has authorized the highest charge of felony murder against Hernandez, which carries a mandatory life without parole sentence. The community is shocked by the brutal nature of the crime and the authorities are continuing their investigation to bring justice for the victims.
