A former Memphis police officer, Emmitt Martin, is expected to change his not guilty plea in connection to alleged civil rights violations that resulted in the beating death of Tyre Nichols. Another former officer, Desmond Mills Jr., previously changed his plea to guilty for excessive force and obstruction of justice charges. Nichols died in the hospital several days after a traffic stop where multiple officers were recorded kicking, punching, and hitting him with a baton. Three other officers involved in the incident have pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges. Martin’s change of plea hearing is scheduled for Friday in front of U.S. District Judge Mark Norris. This story is still developing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
